Los Angeles is the largest city in the country to adopt on use of plastic bags. For more then a decade, LA city council has been fighting over to ban plastic bags at grocery stores. At the LA city council meeting on Tuesday (yesterday), voted 11-1 and approved to ban single-use of plastic bags. This ban will take effect January 1, 2014 for big stores that make more than $2 million a year. It will go into effect in July 2014 for small stores that carry limited groceries. Under this plastic bag ban, stores that sell perishable items will be prohibited from handing out plastic grocery bags. If the store violates this ban, the store has to pay a fine. The new law says there will be a 10 cents charge per paper bag. When you go grocery shopping next year, don't forget your own grocery bag or there will be a 10 cents charge if you want a paper bag!
